Some thematic areas were touched upon in Poradnik Językowy only is certain periods, which depended on the topicality and significance of a given subject matter. It was often Poradnik Językowy that presented a given topic for the first time. This can be best evidenced by a series of papers on phraseology written by Stanisław Skorupka in 1950–1952, which in fact gave grounds for a new linguistic discipline, cf. “Kompozycja grup frazeologicznych” (“Composition of phraseological groups”); “Poprawność stylistyczna grup frazeologicznych” (“Stylistic correctness of phraseological groups”); “Dobór wyrazowy a dobór frazeologiczny” (“Word selection and idiom selection); “Frazeologia a semantyka” (“Phraseology and semantics”); “Frazeologia a stylistyka” (“Phraseology and stylistics”).

What was also characteristic was the introduction of dialectological topics in the period 1948–1976, which had been handled occasionally only, and in later periods (until now) – on a regular basis, yet not so extensively. This was connected with papers by W. Doroszewski: “Przedmiot i metody dialektologii” (“Subject and methods of dialectology”) (1953), “Słowotwórstwo a geografia lingwistyczna” (“Word formation and linguistic geography”) (1954), “Struktura języka a geografia lingwistyczna” (“Language structure and linguistic geography”) (1960), which reflected increased interest in Polish folk dialects in new geographical and socio-political conditions after the Second World War, new research carried out in the Warmia and Masuria, Masovia and Podlasie regions by linguists from Warsaw, as well as general Slavic and European interest in linguistic cartography and linguistic atlases – cf. e.g. R.I. Lexicographical issues, which were not dealt with at all in the first two periods in the history of Poradnik Językowy, were introduced in the post-war period in a similar way. This was obviously associated with works on Słownik języka polskiego (Dictionary of the Polish language) edited by W. Doroszewski, performed in 1948–1976, and in later periods – with subsequent dictionaries which were being compiled in the Warsaw linguistic centre, which laid the foundations for the so-called Warsaw school of practical lexicography. Most recently, Poradnik Językowy has dealt with all important general dictionaries of Polish – discussions concerning these works have been published in a special column – “Old and contemporary dictionaries” (“Słowniki dawne i współczesne”).

Special attention should be also paid to another two thematic areas which have been discussed extensively in the two latest periods in the history of Poradnik Językowy (1977–2008 and after 2008). One covers – in general terms – issues related to speech development and its constraints, alternative communication and therapy. The other thematic area concerns the use of the Polish language abroad and teaching Polish as a foreign/inherited/second language. Its increased importance is due to non-linguistic factors which have been affecting our language over the past 20 years, such as political and cultural changes in Poland, migration movements (emigration and immigration), Polish accession to the European Union – which have changed the reach and status of the Polish language abroad.
